Migrating a Microsoft 365 Tenant from Company A to Company B

Introduction: Company A and Company B are both medium-sized businesses that recently decided to merge operations. As part of this merger, it was necessary to migrate Company A's Microsoft 365 tenant to Company B's tenant. This case study will detail the steps taken by Vault Security Solutions team to ensure a successful migration and the benefits that were achieved as a result.

Background: Company A had been using Microsoft 365 for several years and had built up a significant amount of data and configurations within their tenant. Company B, on the other hand, was a newer user of Microsoft 365 and had a smaller tenant. Both companies were using similar versions of Microsoft 365 and had similar configurations.

 Pre-Migration Preparation:

  • The first step in the migration process was to determine which data and configurations from Company A needed to be migrated to Company B. This involved working with stakeholders from both companies to identify which data and configurations were critical to the business and which could be phased out or consolidated.
  • Next, a plan was developed to migrate the data and configurations in phases, starting with the most critical data and configurations and moving on to less critical data and configurations as the migration progressed.
  • In order to ensure a smooth migration, a pilot migration was performed to test the migration process and identify any issues that needed to be addressed before the full migration took place.

Migration Process:

  • The migration process was performed using the Microsoft 365 built-in migration tools. The data and configurations from Company A were exported to a PST file, which was then imported into Company B's tenant.
  • During the migration, the data and configurations were mapped to the appropriate locations within Company B's tenant. This ensured that the data and configurations were in the correct locations and had the correct permissions within the new tenant.
  • The migration process was performed in phases, with the most critical data and configurations being migrated first. This allowed for any issues to be identified and addressed early in the migration process.

Post-Migration:

  • After the migration was completed, the data and configurations were tested to ensure that they were in the correct locations and had the correct permissions.
  • The users from both companies were trained on the new configurations and data structures within the tenant.
  • Ongoing monitoring was performed to ensure that the migration was successful and that the data and configurations were being used as intended.

Results:

  • The migration was completed successfully, with minimal disruption to the business operations of both companies.
  • The data and configurations were in the correct locations and had the correct permissions within the new tenant.
  • The merger of Company A and Company B was able to proceed as planned, with the companies being able to take advantage of the increased efficiencies that result from having a single, unified Microsoft 365 tenant. Conclusion: Migrating a Microsoft 365 tenant can be a complex process, but with the right planning and execution, it can be done successfully with minimal disruption to the business operations. By working with stakeholders from both companies and using the built-in migration tools, we were able to achieve a successful migration that helped to facilitate the merger of Company A and Company B.
